Fitness Is Not About Thinness

Are you one of those people that believes only thin people are fit? Do you think that being in shape means you have to be a size 2? (When did a size 10 become fat?) I will try to stay away from the “E” word (exercise), because fitness is a lifestyle, not an activity. You can be fit and healthy and never set foot inside a gym. Most people have abandoned their workout program because they were doing something they were told they should be doing rather than something they liked doing.

Those of us who are over 50 years old and/or over 50 pounds overweight can achieve healthy fitness levels and we can begin at any age and any size. Fitness is the Fountain of Youth. Increased levels of physical activity equals increased psychological well-being. A sedentary lifestyle is the major contributing factor for heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes. Interestingly, osteoporosis is not typically a problem for people of size - weight bearing exercise builds bone density and just walking is weight bearing.

I want to motivate you to become more physically active. This is not a blog about weight loss. It is about fitness and good nutrition. In fact, why not throw away your scale? If that’s unthinkable at this time, put it in the trunk of your car for a while so you can take your focus away from that number. (Note: If you are following a physician prescribed weight loss program, please continue to follow your physician’s directions.) The focus of this blog is about going from sitting to moving. However, by increasing your level of physical activity, by learning to nurture and love your body by feeding it well, you will likely lose weight and you will definitely extend your life.

My fitness progarm is for the person who is thinking about getting fit, but wouldn’t know how to begin. How many fitness books have you found in the bookstore that understand your needs? Even by starting only one day a week, you will see tremendous gains within the first two months. Remember, you are going from doing nothing to doing something - that a 100% increase in activity! You will see changes. At the very least, you will increase your stamina, balance and confidence.

Looking forward to our journey together. I encourage your feedback and insights regarding the program.

Warm regards,

Sherry Netherland
